The second, SGP-0003, is a more structural change. It builds on SIMD-0553 and reimagines the transaction fee mechanism. The current flat 5000-lamport signature fee would be split into a base inclusion fee and a separate resource fee. The critical detail is that the resource fee, the portion that scales with computational load, would be burned. Based on my audit experience, this split is more elegant than it appears. It decouples the cost of block space from the cost of computation. It aligns the fee with the actual network burden a transaction imposes. The Core: The Math of Scarcity Let's break down the numbers, because the narrative hinges on them. Currently, SOL's staking yield sits near 5.25%. The bulk of that, about 3.78%, comes from protocol inflation. The remainder is derived from transaction fees and MEV. This means that over 70% of staking rewards are funded by new token issuance. The system is, in essence, inflationary. Under the proposed changes, this dynamic shifts. According to the analysis from 21Shares, the nominal staking yield would fall to approximately 4.34% in the first year, drop to 3% in the second, and settle at 2.25% by the third. This is a deliberate cooling of the reward engine. The question is whether the burn mechanism can compensate. The burn potential is significant. At current activity levels, the daily burn from the resource fee would jump from a modest 600-800 SOL to an estimated 7,500-9,000 SOL. At prevailing prices, that is a daily value of roughly $712,500 to $855,000. It sounds impressive, and it is a clear acceleration. But here is the uncomfortable truth: even at that rate, the burn does not fully offset the current daily issuance of approximately $4.5 million. The net supply is still growing. In November 2023, Cosmos (ATOM) voted to cut its maximum inflation rate. The token rose 25% in a month and 10% over three months.
